A Yoga Membership Moved Its Whole Library Off Uscreen — Here's What It Cost

CrocOTT Team · July 18, 2026

If you teach yoga online, you already know the quiet arithmetic of a membership platform: every new member is wonderful, and every new member also makes your monthly bill a little bigger. You built the classes. You found the students. And you pay rent on the shelf they sit on, forever.

This is what happened when one yoga and meditation membership decided to stop renting. Everything below is from a real migration. We've kept the studio anonymous, and rounded the figures slightly, at their preference.

250+
on-demand classes
~90
hours of video
~140 GB
library size
days
to migrate, not months

The problem they came to us with

They weren't shopping for software. They had five specific things making their week harder, and every one of them was costing money or capping growth:

  • The bill grew every time they succeeded. On a per-subscriber plan, signing up new members made the platform more expensive — so growth and cost were tied together, permanently.
  • The library was running out of room. Around 90 hours of classes and adding more every week, against a plan that stops at 100.
  • Only one person could log in. A founder, a communications coordinator and several teachers — sharing a single set of credentials, because that's all the plan allowed.
  • They wanted to launch accredited courses and couldn't. The plan was a second membership tier: structured CPD courses that issue a certificate when a student finishes. There was no way to do it.
  • Nobody could find them on Google. Every new student had to come from ads, social, or word of mouth.

Why they couldn't fix any of it themselves

This is the part that matters, and it's the part most people misread as their own failure. None of the five problems above were caused by doing something wrong. They were plan boundaries, not settings — and you can't configure your way past a plan boundary.

Look at what their platform actually offers (Uscreen public pricing, July 2026):

Plan Price Admin logins Storage Certificates
Starter$49 / mo120 hrsnone
Growth$149 / mo + $1.99 / member1100 hrsnone
App Essentials$449 / mo + $0.99 / member3none
Customon requestunlimitednone

Read the last column again. Certificates don't appear at any price. There is no tier to climb to — the studio could have paid five times more and still not been able to launch the courses they wanted. That is the difference between something being expensive and something being impossible.

The others are climbable, but only upward: a second login means jumping from $149 to $449 a month. More storage means another upgrade. And the search problem can't be solved at all, because the platform has no blog or article pages for Google to index — no plan adds them.

Could they have built it themselves? Realistically, no. They teach yoga and run a business; they don't employ developers. And when they asked their platform for something as basic as how many gigabytes is my library — the number they'd need to plan any move — the answer was evasive. Their two options were to keep paying more for less, or to leave.

What we did

We moved them onto a platform they own, and solved the five problems at their source rather than working around them.

  • Every class, properly presented — title, description, and artwork in both landscape and portrait, so it looks right on a laptop and on a phone. All of it lifted straight off the old platform and repackaged as standard MP4: no re-encoding, no quality loss, and nobody re-uploaded 250 files by hand.
  • Filters that match how people choose a class — by style, level, intensity, body focus, and intention. Not a wall of thumbnails; a way to find "gentle, 20 minutes, for my lower back" at 9pm.
  • Real teacher pages — each teacher has a profile with a bio, photo, credentials, and the styles they teach, and their classes link back to them automatically.
  • Memberships in their own currency — Stripe in their own account, with monthly and annual pricing living in one package instead of two duplicate catalogues.
  • Categories they can change themselves — the studio adds its own filter fields and dropdown options without waiting on a developer.
  • Logins for the whole team — role-based access built in: admin, content manager, analytics-only. No per-seat charge, no tier to climb.
  • A budget that fit — the work was split into two phases so the studio wasn't asked for a lump sum during a tight year. Platform and migration first; the course and community modules second.

The result, in money

Here is the comparison with the tier named, because "Uscreen costs X" is meaningless without saying which plan. A membership this size sits on Uscreen's Growth plan.

  Uscreen Growth (rented) Owned platform
Base fee$149 / monthnone
Per subscriber$1.99 each, every month$0
One-time setup + migration~$300
Server + storageincluded~$46 / month
$40 server + $6 storage
At 300 members~$746 / month
≈ $8,950 / year
~$46 / month
≈ $850 first year

At 300 members the setup cost pays for itself in about two weeks, and the gap widens every month after that — because one side grows with your success and the other doesn't.

The search problem got solved too, and it's worth its own number. On another CrocOTT platform we measured 90 days of analytics: organic search went from nearly nothing to 36% of all visits, with an engagement rate of 61.7% versus 18.8% for direct traffic — and the site started being cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, which can only quote pages that exist. The full breakdown is here.

When Uscreen is the better choice: if you have fewer than about 100 members, Uscreen's Starter plan is $49/month with no per-subscriber fee — roughly what your own server would cost anyway, without the one-time setup. Owning the platform isn't worth the upfront cost yet. We'd rather tell you that than sell you something you don't need. Come back when you cross ~100 members — that's when the maths flips hard.

"But I don't want to run a server"

Fair. Here is what "self-hosted" actually means in practice for a studio this size: one small machine — 2 processors, 4 GB of memory — running everything, at about $40 a month, plus roughly $6 for the video storage — about $46 all in. It's installed and configured for you. After that, your day-to-day is an admin panel: upload a class, write the description, tag it, assign the teacher. The same work you do now.

And if you'd genuinely rather never see a server, there's a managed option where we run it for you.

What you can add that a rented platform won't sell you

This is where owning the thing starts to matter more than the monthly saving. On a rented platform you file a feature request and wait. On your own, you commission it once and it's yours.

This studio did exactly that: the CPD tier they could not launch on Uscreen at any price is now live on their platform — structured courses that issue each member a certificate, auto-filled with their name and completion date once they have watched enough of every class, with comments underneath each class — visible immediately, moderated by the studio afterwards. The thing that made them leave is the first thing they shipped. These are the modules studios ask for most:

  • Completion certificates — a member finishes a course and gets a certificate automatically, with their name and the date on it. Essential if you offer accredited or CPD training. Uscreen has no equivalent at any tier. Live on this build: certificates are generated per learner and issued automatically once the watch threshold is met.
  • Comments under each class — members ask a question, you or the teacher answer, and it stays under the video for everyone who practises it later. On Uscreen, community features only appear on the Custom plan. Live on this build: comments appear immediately, and the studio moderates after posting.
  • Emails triggered by what members actually do — finished a course, stopped watching for a month, upgraded, card failed. Your platform sends those events into the email tool you already use, and your automations do the rest. We don't replace Mailchimp or Klaviyo; we feed them properly.
  • A second tier for courses — structured courses with their own pricing, sitting alongside your drop-in class library rather than replacing it.
  • Branded apps, at a fixed price — iOS, Android and TV apps published under your own name, bought once, instead of unlocked by moving up a plan forever.

To keep the picture honest: the figures earlier in this article cover the platform, the migration and the branded look only. Every module above is scoped and quoted separately, per project — none of them are bundled into the numbers you just read. We'd rather show you a real number for what you need than advertise a bundle you're partly paying for and never using.

Questions we get from studio owners

Will I lose my videos?

No. Every class is pulled onto your own server and repackaged as standard MP4 — no re-encode, so no quality loss, and no re-uploading by hand. Titles, descriptions, teachers and tags move at the same time. When it's finished, the old platform can be switched off with nothing stranded on it.

Do my members have to sign up again?

Members are imported with the library, and payments move to your own Stripe account, so the billing relationship becomes yours. Your existing site stays live while the new platform is built and tested — members only see the change when you're ready.

Do I need to be technical?

No. The server is set up for you, and after that it's an admin panel. You can even add your own filter categories — style, level, intensity — without a developer. If you'd rather not think about it at all, we can run it for you.

Is it really cheaper?

At a few hundred members, yes, by a wide margin — roughly $8,950 a year versus about $850 in year one. Below ~100 members, Uscreen's $49 Starter plan costs about the same as running your own server and skips the upfront setup — we'll say so rather than sell you something you don't need yet.

What if my library keeps growing?

That's rather the point. Storage is a disk you enlarge for a few dollars a month, not a plan tier you're pushed into at 100 hours.

Can I issue CPD certificates?

Yes — this build does. Each certificate is generated per learner, auto-filled with their name and completion date, and issued automatically once the member has watched enough of every class in the course — no manual sign-off. Certificates are a module we build per project rather than a toggle, so the watch threshold and the certificate design are set up for your courses.

If you're on Uscreen and the per-member fee has started to sting — or you've just noticed you can't give your teachers a login — it's worth twenty minutes. See the full Uscreen comparison, or check the pricing.
